The new version of www.beeitalian.it, the new Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola web site is now online. With new graphics, contents and new technology, the site responds to the demands for visibility, dialogue, participation and content specialisation requested by web users.
A new web site that develops in structure and content, a real portal of information on the world of ceramics and Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola, the historical company with 137 years of experience behind it. The recently introduced pages of www.beeitalian.it online are the starting point for understanding the group’s wealth with its four brands ImolaCeramica, LaFaenzaCeramica, LeonardoCeramica and ClipTile and the new ImolaProject division. Furthermore the central contents demonstrate the attention for product development and innovation, the company’s main priorities together with respect for our surrounding environment.
In terms of graphics the new web site, with the pureness and simplicity expressed in the new layout, represents the blank sheet that reiterates the company’s values and its desire for progress, making art whilst making industry at the same time that has always distinguished the work of Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola.
There are several technological innovations in the web site structure: from care during the design stage to improved surfing to help the user in moving through the pages thanks to the new user friendly menu. There are also several declinations of the nature of the contents, which can be used through detailed images, easily downloadable PDF documents, photo and video galleries and devices for users that allow for sharing on major social networks. All of this innovation is made possible by the use of new high performing CMS, which guarantees maximum traceability on major search engines for all Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola contents.

A new SINFONIA of decoration

Architect and designer Massimiliano Raggi has created the new table line in hand decorated majolica called “SINFONIA” of the ImolArte brand. A continuation of the decoration tradition of Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola and dedicated to floral themes, Sinfonia follows the history and moves in harmony with it, picking up the theme with a re-modernisation of the shapes that can be seen in the contours of the plates and the graphics of the floral subject. Lightness and natural sensuality with small flowers, buds and berries enclosed by branches with small leaves. A formal lightness of fluid contours and subtle brims. Chromatic lightness with a palette of warm colours with the predominance of purple and beige nuances in soft tones created with soft brush strokes in transparent overlap.
The result is much more than a product; it is an “artistic” product that aims at involving all the senses, which by seducing the glance also captures the mind re-evoking the fragrances and the sounds of nature into a texture that vibrates in the pigments of the colours. For Cersaie 2011 Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola presents its “SINFONIA” project, the new fruit of that know-how that is the ancient origin of the company and that still today is the heart of its artistic and industrial production, which has always been accompanied by important and precious collaborations.

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola CONTINUES to invest

Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola is synonymous with “Made in Italy” worldwide. A position it has achieved and maintained through continual investment, careful design activity and research, plus the quality and refinement of its products. All of which have been features of its hundred year history.
Today in 2011 Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola is ready for a further leap forward in order to anticipate and satisfy the new requirements and trends that are gradually taking shape in the design and architecture of the new millennium. This is borne out by the fact that the company has approved an investment plan for 2011 of 40 million euros.
CONTINUA is the name of an innovative production system which, in function of completely restructured premises, means that full body porcelainized Gres slabs and tiles can be produced in large format (1.20x1.20 metres), customised in surface and mass. Moreover, through the use of advanced and sophisticated systems of “materic decoration” the range of aesthetic effects is practically limitless. New ideas and materials can be inserted into the tile, even in several layers, resulting in new generation slabs.
Over and above the high aesthetic and format performances, CONTINUA also means a saving in production costs and above all a reduced environmental impact. The latter always lies at the heart of Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola’s activities, a company with a constant eye to safeguarding people and the environment.
Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola’s investment moreover envisages installation of the PH10000 press (Sacmi production), currently the most powerful in the world and ideal precisely for production of the large formats increasingly requested by the architectural world.

Talent for Tiles 2011

After the success of the first competition and the excellent results achieved, in 2011 Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola is once more proposing “Talent for Tiles”, an international competition for innovative uses of ceramics, reinterpreted in an urban key. Coordinated by Aldo Colonetti (Scientific Director IED [European Institute of Design] – Editor of Ottagono) with the collaboration of Michele Capuani and Cumulus (International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media), “Talent for Tiles 2011” has broadened its horizons. Over and above Italian and European students from the most prestigious international schools of design and architecture, this year also sees the involvement of American students who will further augment the capital of ideas and projects with their vision of cities, resulting in comparisons of an increasingly wide-ranging and innovative nature.
The students taking part in this second competition (25-30 per school) attend: The Ohio State University - Department of Design (USA), Zurich School of the Arts (Switzerland), Instituto de Artes Visuais, Design e Marketing of Lisbon (Portugal), Milan Polytechnic (Italy).
The competition aims at going into depth on aspects linked with the transformations of cities, seeking to intervene mainly on the spaces between buildings, between streets and buildings: all those places that normally elude planning. Because it is precisely by the care taken over “non-places”, or by its absence, that we measure overall urban quality, the pleasantness and liveability of a city. In particular the students must focus on surfaces, favouring them in virtue of the performances and dimensions of new ceramic products.
The theme of surfaces, in architecture and urban quality in general, is becoming increasingly fundamental in upgrading our contemporaneity. In recent years the Italian ceramic sector, and Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola in particular, has been developing research in this direction with view to producing formats of high structural quality, thick and lightweight. The schools taking part must base their work precisely on these distinctive aspects of performance. Architecture and our cities also need ceramic products for their qualities of sustainability and easy maintenance: this is why the theme of surfaces is no longer solely an aesthetic choice but is one of the elements fundamental to design and to contemporary planning.
The jury for the second “Talent for Tiles” competition are all renowned in their fields: Mario Botta, architect, who once more takes the role of Chairman; Marco Romano, town planner; Franco Origoni, architect and curator of numerous exhibitions; Giulio Iacchetti, industrial designer; Michele Capuani, architect and Head of Training at IED; Stefano Bolognesi, CEO of Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola.
All material must be delivered no later than January 2012. The projects will then be assessed by the Jury and the three winners selected.
Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola will publish a monograph on the projects and also exhibit them at the Milan Triennial on the occasion of the Salone del Mobile, scheduled for April 2012. The prize-giving ceremony for the three best projects will take place on 17th April 2012 at the Milan Triennial.

Gio Ponti' s design

A floor-sculpture formed by 1,778 unique pieces for a total area of 60 square metres
Until 24th July the Milan Triennial is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the excellences of Made in Italy. An exceptional event in which Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola will be taking an active part with a unique work created for the occasion: a portion of floor-sculpture to Gio Ponti’s original design. So once more we may appreciate the creative genius of this great Italian designer, celebrated worldwide for his multifaceted talent and his vision of material and space.
The floor-sculpture was entirely handmade by the decorators and enamellists of the Imolarte artistic department: six people who for about 2 months devoted themselves entirely to carrying out this imposing project. An overall 1,778 unique pieces were created for a total area of about 60 square metres (10.50 x 5.60 m.), faithfully reproducing Gio Ponti’s design with its geometries and colours (no less than 12, from yellow to green, from indigo to blue).
The choice of the Milan Triennial and Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola to create a Gio Ponti work didn’t come about by chance. In fact artistic collaboration between the designer and the Imola company dates as far back as 1946. During a visit to company premises he found out that there was an actual artistic department with a long track record, and he was struck by certain sculptural forms, the work of then Artistic Director Domenico Minganti. The understanding between the two was decisive and Ponti thus began a long relationship of collaboration with Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola. There were two highly significant moments in this relationship. The first was marked by Minganti’s creation of the Plastiche. Ponti was enthusiastic and they appeared in the magazine "Stile". Tributes to artists such as De Chirico, Morandi and Campigli were followed by “The Horse of Troy”, “The Whale” and other sculptures suggested by Ponti himself, who sent in several sketches. The second moment was in the early 1950s when the famous “Living Bottles” came into being, in multiple variants and plastic finishes: designed by Gio Ponti and created by Minganti,they had a wholly autonomous ideational continuity right into the mid sixties.
Lastly, in this same second phase, Gio Ponti decided to use the 18th century decoration of the Faenza carnation, revisiting it in 3 shades of blue: this resulted in the undisputed success of the “Blue Carnation”. A decoration of refined and elegant taste which to this day is still produced exclusively by Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola.

Students of the Schwabisch Gmund University (Germany) are the winners of the first edition of the contest “Talent for Tiles” organised by Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola, coordinated by Aldo Colonetti (Science Manager for IED (European Design Institute) – Editor of “Ottagono” magazine). In addition to winning the first prize for the “Vena” project designed by Christoph Kirchner, Moritz Kihn, AntonioKrimer Fernades and Markus Gillhuber, students of the German institute also won third place for the project “Terra verde” created by Peter Kraft, Jochen Maria Weber, Timo Rohrig and Moritz Fuhrmann. Italian students Giacomo Lipari and Caterina Benini of ISIA institute Faenza (RA) earned second place on the podium with their project called “VelveTile”.
Interest raised for this first edition of the contest was aimed at the spaces between buildings, between streets and buildings, uncared for vertical surface and all of those places that have escaped design. It is precisely in the care or lack of care for these “non places” that we can measure comprehensive urban quality, the pleasure and liveability of cities.
The award ceremony took place in the late afternoon on April 12th at the Triennale of Milan, whilst the projects will be on show from April 12th to 17th at the International Furniture Show of Milan in a 200m2 area dedicated to the contest.

Volcano is the name of the installation to be presented at Triennale di Milano during the International Furniture Show (12th – 17th April 2011). This installation intends to represent metamorphosis as a force that mutates material through fire, an alchemic allegory of the human laboratory and its work in transforming base substances into precious essence. Eighty-five levels of handmade ceramics chosen from those most available in Italy (Slate, Carnica, Luserna, Porphyry, Travertine, etc.), arranged in a spiral, make up the crater of a volcano, to symbolise raw material. This is captured in the act of belching out the natural product of its evolution, as colourful, shiny glazed ceramics. Ceramic tiles are an extraordinary material for this theme thanks to their performance, functional and aesthetic qualities and for the multicolour characteristics of the material.
In order to create this installation, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola will use three of its main collections: Word up by LeonardoCeramica, which brings together technology and high versatility, Hall by ImolaCeramica to give surprising chromatic effects, Brenta by LaFaenzaCeramica to show the most indented and evocative vein of the rock.

Talent for Tiles: awards for the best three projects during the Triennale of Milan

The first edition of the “Talent for Tiles” contest organised by Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola and coordinated by Aldo Colonetti (Science Manager for IED (European Design Institute) – Editor of “Ottagono” magazine) will soon celebrate its conclusion. As part of the International Furniture Show in Milan to be held between April 12th and 17th, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola will set up a stand of approximately 200m2 dedicated to the Contest and to its best projects. The stand is designed by King & Miranda Design, the prestigious Milanese studio with an Anglo Spanish soul, which synthesises cultures of different countries in its works. The award ceremony for the three winning projects, selected from over sixty entries, will be held at 6.00pm on Tuesday April 12th at the Triennale of Milan.

Choosing the best works is an international judges’ panel made up of illustrious names from the world of design, architecture and art, such as architect Mario Botta, designers Marc Sadler, Perry King and Santiago Miranda, urban designer Marco Romano, the president of Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola Stefano Bolognesi and the research and development manager of Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola Mauro Gandolfi.

The first edition of “Talent for Tiles” saw the participation of students from the following design and architecture schools: Ecole superieure d'art et design de Saint-Etienne (France), IED Rome, ISIA Faenza (RA), Lund University (Sweden), University of Applied Sciences Schwbisch Gmund (Germany).

New technology for the production of ceramic materials opens up possibilities for creating claddings and recognisable urban design products. This contest has the aim of producing projects for the large vertical surfaces of future cities, extending the field of action of ceramics by moving it to other uses of urban design (surfaces, urban elements, vertical walls) in contamination with other materials (plastic, glass, aluminium, etc.). All of this without neglecting all the aspects linked and connected to sustainability: in the case of urban requalification projects, especially for the increase of filtering surfaces and available green pro capita, recyclability and reuse of materials.

“Talent for Tiles” saw the collaboration of Michele Capuani and the Cumulus association (International Association of Art, Design and Media Universities and Colleges).

ClipTile: ceramic flooring with an automatic clip

Technological research connected to the development of new products is one of the foundations of the entire activity of Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola. In this framework ClipTile was born. It is a system for stoneware that, thanks to the innovative plastic support with a precision automatic clip, allows state-of-the-art tile laying requiring only a few, simple steps.
ClipTile is quick to lay, versatile and elegant. The pavements created utilising this system, which artfully combines technique and aesthetics, are ready to use and may be walked upon immediately after laying, in that there is no need for glues and grouts for their application and consequently, the risks of dirtying them are also eliminated.
The elevated technical performance (class Bfl-S1 flame resistance, suitable for heated flooring, elevated acoustic absorption, anti-allergy) and the great variety of aesthetic solutions (Through-body stoneware and glazed stoneware, with natural, lapped and brilliant sanded finishing, with a wide range of chromatic and format solutions) make ClipTile a valid system for flooring of the domestic environment and for those of commercial environments, small or large.
Ideal for renovations – the technology of dry joints, without glues, allows precise laying on any type of old flooring: marbles, granites, ceramic tiles, terracotta, linoleum, without the need for demolition – ClipTile is also perfect for new flooring, adapting itself to the cement preparation and to any kind of support.

“Talent for Tiles 2010” is the title of the first edition of the international competition on the innovative uses of ceramics, as seen in an urban key, promoted by Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola and coordinated by Aldo Colonetti (Scientific Director IED – Ottogano Director), with the collaboration of Michele Capuani and the Cumulus Association (International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media).
The interest of this first edition will be directed towards those spaces that lie between buildings, between streets and buildings, on the neglected vertical spaces, on all those places that planning does not consider. It is precisely in the attention dedicated to the “non-places”, or in the absence of them, that one measures overall urban quality, the pleasure and the liveability of the cities.
The new technologies for the production of ceramic material open new possibilities for the realisation of coverings and products for recognisable urban decoration. This competition aims at producing projects for the large vertical surfaces of the future cities, enlarging the range of action of ceramics, shifting it in other urban decoration uses (surfaces, urban elements, vertical walls), in contamination with other materials (plastic, glass, aluminium, etc.). Without obviously omitting all the aspects joined and connected to sustainability: in the case of projects of urban redevelopment, especially in the increase of filtering surfaces, and of the green area available pro capita, recycling and reuse of materials.
The competition is open to students in international design and architecture schools. In this first edition the participating schools are: Ecole superieure d'art et design de Saint-Etienne (France), IED of Rome, ISIA of Faenza (RA), Lund University (Sweden), Schwabisch Gmund University (Germany).
All the projects must be delivered on or before 31 December 2010 and undergo the evaluation of the Jury, which will select the 3 best projects.
Members of the jury of the first edition of the “Talent for Tiles” competition are several illustrious personalities such as: Mario Botta (architect), Marc Sadler (designer), Santiago Miranda (designer), Marco Romano (historian – urban planning), Stefano Bolognesi (President Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola) and Matteo Zauli (Director of the Carlo Zauli Museum).
Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola will make a themed collection of the projects that have been realised in addition to exhibiting the same at the Triennal of Milan on occasion of the Furniture Exhibition planned for April 2011.

When eco-sustainability joins with the production processes

These days the expansion of human activity moves at the same pace as the reduction of the capacity of the ecosystem to regenerate itself. An example of this is the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, such as oil, or the deforesting of the Amazonian jungle: if the ecosystem had an elevated rhythm of production, we wouldn’t be worrying about our own needs and those of the future generations! It is for this reason that today, more than ever, eco-sustainability is a value to follow and identify with.
In such a framework, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola, always attentive to the dynamics that concern the respect for the environment and the person, has already been working for several years. Through adequate identification and installation of the technical resources and plants, the company is moving closer all the time to a “Green” policy geared towards a company that is focused on eco-efficiency and sustainability; in order to be “effective and efficient” in a world market that is always more global, but without for this reason leaving behind some fundamental values of company ethics. Being ambassadors in the world of Made in Italy also happens because of choices of responsibility, and not only productivity.

Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola has activated a series of initiatives to make itself and its employees “ecologically aware” and more attentive in their daily activities.

Everyday, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola recovers 98% of the waste that derives from their own industrial activities and offices, reconverting it into other uses (percentual certified by Certiquality, Ref. Norm ISO 14001).

Everyday, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola saves the equivalent of approximately 11 tons of oil (the quantity required to make 4 round-the-world trips with a car!) thanks to the installation of the last 3 co-generation plants (currently there are 6 of them installed, of various sizes). The savings made by such plants are certified, or are in the course of certification, by the Electrical Energy and Gas Authority.

Everyday, for the benefit of the national electrical system, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola is ready to suspend, without receiving any advance warning and in any hour or day of the year, the electrical supply to its own industrial plants, for a noticeable reduction of energy traffic. All of this is to ward off any possible interruptions of electrical current, caused by congestion in the network traffic, along with a relative Blackout, done in order to protect the citizen, their homes, workplaces and schools. Such adhesion to the programme of possibility of interrupting the electrical supply is regulated by the AEEG deliberation number 289 of 2006 and 122 of 2007.

Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola offers its contribution in support of the guaranteeing domestic consumption of natural gas: indeed, when faced with exceptional events that could in some way endanger the distribution of gas during the winter months and could put the final clients in a risk situation, it has agreed that it would reduce the consumption of methane, so as to ward off any possible interruptions to domestic users. (AEEG deliberation number 200 of 2009).

Carlotta Gollini
Direct 39 0542 601637

Pierluigi Papi
Mobile 338 3648766

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola Press Office
ufficiostampa@imolaceramica.it

5 mm

The close cooperation between research and industrial production led the Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola to increasingly develop innovative solutions to meet diversified living needs.
This approach and the relevant company know-how resulted in the creation of a porcelain tile only 5mm thick which will further increase the application of porcelainized Gres, a concentrate of innovation produced in accordance with standard UNI EN ISO 14411-G which regulates ceramic production in porcelainized Gres.
Less thickness and weight are advantageous factors for certain uses: the 5mm can be used both for paving and facing.
The projects created with the innovative 5mm porcelainized Gres are as follows: Maxima 5mm and Strobus 5mm with the commercial trademark Imola Ceramica; Collection 5mm with the commercial trademark LaFaenza Ceramica.

Advantages of the 5mm
1 - 5mm thickness means that the existing surface can be covered without the need to demolish floors or walls in the living spaces, thus reducing the disturbance and operation costs;
2 - the 5mm is not only synonymous of innovation but also of ecosustainability since the reduced thickness results in lower environmental impact because:

less raw materias are involved in production and packing;

energy consumption is less because less time is required for the production process;

there is lower consumption of oil-based products during transport due to the limited weight, thus limiting the dispersion of elements that pollute the environment and are harmful to humans;
3 - the reduced weight of the 5mm, about 13.5 Kg per sq. m., means that the tiles are easier to handle during fixing and transportation and can be cut with a glass-cutter;
4 - the 5 mm satisfies the requirements of the standard in force (UNI EN 14411-G) with regard to technical performances governing the ceramic production of porcelainized Gres, thanks to a support with water absorption below 0.1% and with considerable technical characteristics;
5 - the surface of the 5 mm can undergo all the glaze and finishes applications typical of traditional porcelainized Gres, thus ensuring a multiplicity of aesthetic solutions.
The 5mm is a porcelainized Gres Made in Italy that couples technical performance with a complete response to the diversified needs of building rehabs and with special attention to the environment.
A lightweight product, slender and tough, with ecological design for an innovative and sustainable choice.

Information
The 5mm is easy to cut, drill and handle;
In order to achieve a perfect fixing of the 5mm the fixer is required to check the existing surface, which must be perfectly planar. Double spreading of adhesive is advised for laying;
The 5mm is easily cleanable and requires no special maintenance.

Nature and technology combine to give birth to a new concept in ceramic tiles which places the relationship between man and the environment at the centre; an inseparable combination for the conscious achievement of eco-efficient corporate principles as well as those of environmental eco-compatibility, sealed with three recognitions such as ISO 14001 Environmental Certification, the production of ceramic products with the Biogres and Progetto life trademarks.
Environmental Certification ISO 14001

The environmental management system of Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola - in reference to the UNI EN ISO 14001 Normative- was imposed on the basis of the following principles:

Protection of the environment and natural resources:

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola strongly believes in the value of the environment and feels that its industrial production objectives should be pursued and fulfilled using strategies and facilities that allow the optimal and efficient use of the resources and in complete respect of the environment.
It is for this reason that Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola focus on minimizing the environmental impact of its production of ceramic tiles and optimizes the use of natural resources thanks to the recycling processes which recover the waste from the various raw and cooked processing as well as optimizing the water supply resources and the reutilization of recyclable material for packaging.

Efficient and effective energy policy:

Through the introduction of optimized plant solutions, Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola is devoted to constantly reducing the energy consumption of the production processes.The majority of the electrical energy utilized is produced in-house through the use of the most modern cogeneration systems

Respect for the ecosystem:

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola is dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact of its industrial production in order to protect the entire ecosystem.
Therefore, Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola completely recovers all of the water used in the working processes thus reducing the discharge to zero; it performs continual monitoring of the significant emissions in order to achieve a high level of reduction of the pollutants that are critical to the environment, it conducts complete differential waste collection of the paper, plastic material, wood, steel and copper.

Biogres

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola has undertaken a new project: to create its own porcelain stoneware composed of a blend which combines traditional mixes with materials that derive from the recovery of raw and cooked scrap as well as the residue from the depuration processes. This combination gives birth to the Biogres brand which characterizes the production of Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola with ecological quality and aesthetics.
The Biogres brand products have the following distinctive characteristics:

100% reutilization of the raw waste, with the reduction in the use of new prime materials and protection of the natural resources;

100% reutilization of the water used for processing and consequent reduction in the water requirement, thus protecting the water resource of the territory;

100% recycling of the cooked waste;

Reutilization of the non-ceramic waste for the recycling processes and using them in other production processes;

100% recycling of the depuration residue;

20% reduction of the energy consumption through the installation of high energy performance system solutions;

Over 95% of the energy required is generated through in-house production using cogeneration systems;

15% reduction of the CO2 emission;

Absence of volatile organic substances;

Containment of the emissions into the atmosphere which is by far inferior to the environmental limits required by the Italian legislation.

Life 05 ENV/IT/00875 P.S.V. project (Polishing Sludge Valorisation)

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola has received recognition on behalf of the European Union which has chosen the P.S.V. project for the Life Ambiente project which involves the creation of an ecological process for the utilization of the waste that derives from working the ceramic and similar materials (marble, granites) with the fine tuning of an innovative process that involves reactive sintering.
Apart from the recovery and utilization of the primary and secondary material, which are currently stocked at the dump, this process involves zeroing the environmental impact of the processes that involve smoothening and working the ceramic material and the generation of new products that are entirely recyclable.

Advantages for the Environment

Recovery and return to the environment of water used in the work processes and polishing of ceramic materials.

Recovery and valorisation of raw and secondary materials currently stored in dumps.

Zeroing of the environmental impact of the work processes and polishing of ceramic materials.

Full recyclability of the new products.

With this rapid ceramurgic process innovative materials for the construction industry and industrial installations will be obtained.
